Beyond Carving :: General Questions

  • What do you mean by "carved"?
    • When a design is ready, the project is carved on a CNC machine and then some hand-carving is done, as necessary, before sanding and finishing the piece(s) to suit. A CNC router is a computer controlled shaping machine. These are related to the hand held router but instead of hand held routing, the tool paths can be controlled via computer numerical control.

  • How do I mount my sign?
    • We can install eye-hooks or add slots on the back to make it easier to hang. We can also pre-drill holes so that you can just screw it directly to a post, tree, railing or building. We also add different hardware options so that your project can be hung like a painting.

  • Can I hang my sign outside?
    • Because cedar is one of the most durable woods available, hanging your sign outside will not ruin it. If the sign is made from a material other than cedar, we can provide recommendations for its proper care.

  • What about project sizes?
    • At the present, we concentrate on a maximum of 24”x60” (61cm x 152cm approx).

Beyond Carving :: Ordering Questions

  • How do I place an order?
    • To place an order, please contact us.

  • Scott's or Scotts?
    • It's up to you. It is important that your order form be filled out completely and correctly. Once payment has been received by us, you will be able to see a preview image of what your sign will look like when completed and can make changes from there, but the majority of the sign detail should be worked out in the initial stages.

  • Do I get to pick my own font?
    • You can, but we usually suggest suitable font styles for most designs. Most font styles are supported by our design software.

  • Can I have names, dates, and / or graphics carved into or onto keepsake boxes,  jewellery boxes, etc.?
    • Yes, this would be done in the design stage.

  • What are my choices for paint colour in the carved areas?
    • As with font styles, paint colours are also suggested when designed. Generally, black or dark brown is recommended for house or property numbers since these colours give maximum contrast for viewing at a distance. Other colours are possible and can be quite striking.

  • Do you put a finish coat on my sign?
    • Yes, all signs are sold finished. Please be sure to specify whether the sign will be hung inside or out – this will make a difference in its finish coat.

  • When and how do I pay for my order?
    • Work on a project is only started once your payment has been received. We accept Visa, MasterCard, cash, money orders and cheques. Please note that if paying by money order or cheque there may be a slight delay to allow time for your payment to clear.

  • Will I get to see what my sign will look like before you carve it?
    • Yes, once your payment has been received, we'll send you a preview image of how your sign will look before it's actually made. We ask that you respond as soon as possible with your approval to continue or note any design changes you want to see.

  • How do I get my completed order?
    • You're more than welcome to stop by and pick your sign up, otherwise it will be packaged and shipped to you. Shipping charges are not included in the website prices, but will be included in the invoice we send.

  • How long does it take to get my sign?
    • Signs usually take 1 to 3 weeks to complete from start to finish. Because of the amount of work that goes into each item, and that we rely on customer input throughout the process, this time frame is approximate. It will also depend on the number of orders we have in progress. Some boxes and “just for fun” signs are in-stock items.

  • Can you rush my sign order?
    • Rush orders are possible but will incur an extra cost.
